8 ways to save money on your cable or direct tv and be entertained
1. Hulu- If you have an internet connection, you'll fall in love with hulu, you can watch the shows you love, and free. The last season you missed of many shows are on it, movies, even games.
Hulu plus- Its the high end hulu, the one where you can get all the latest episodes of all the newest shows, some shows that are only on hulu, many overseas shows like new UK comedys and its not free its $7.99 a month, but compared to cable its a steal.
2. Netflicks
Rent movies by internet and US mail. You go to the internet site, join and choose a plan starting at $4.99 and you choose movies net flicks sends to you to watch at home
Instant Netflicks- Net flicks also has a small fee service to watch movies and tv shows instantly thru streaming video in your home, you go thru netflicks link above, choose your service and method of payment, read if your computer or tv unit is compatible with netflicks plus services, and your hooked up.
Sorry apple users-net flicks cannot stream to your computer systems<UGGG>
3. Redbox-
You've seen them outside grocery stores or in strip malls or gas stations, they are red boxs with movies to rent for $1, new movies, recently released movies (like on dvd) and tv shows. You do have to find a redbox, but they are listed on line at their site thru facebook.
4. Network websites-
There are tons of networks not just ABC< CBS<NBC
there is TNT, A&E, and others
go to their site such as TNT you can either watch an episode live, or a clip of a recent one. On Fox network you can watch a whole season of your favorites, such as house. Many offer premier services that work like pay tv, where you pay for a movie or tv episodes then watch them on demand.
Net works also have on demand, as well
5. Showtime extras:
Show time has preview episodes- they are free and full feature episodes of Nurse Jackie, Dexter , Weeds, The Big C, United states of Tara to name their best ones. You can watch an episode you choose free from their side bar free, if you like the show you can either do an on demand where you pay per episode or subscribe.
The other pay preview nets do this also, and offer simlar services, they all participate in a free weekend of TV, I have watched whole seasons of Nurse Jackie back to back on one of these freebie weekends.
ITs a hit and miss, they dont advertise on the internet only on their sites and on their pay channels.
6. Apps- Wow the stuff you can watch on your phone for free, if you have the app, check out apples i apps or the app store at verizen or droids app store.
7. If your an apple geek and know computers, you can down load movies thru Utorrent. Its best to go to you tube and select this video, the step by step instructions by the guy from UK were great and its free. Yes they are full feature movies you can down load and then put on DVD. I watched Harry potters latest movie one week before it's dvd release, awesome..
8. Free online TV
http://www.freetvonline.com/
This place is awesome. Watch tv for free Apple users do need to download a free software kit to use the site, but again its free. Super choices to watch all the new tv shows, new episodes loaded daily. Great value in entertainment.

Amazing
The Internet never ceases to amaze me. I went on my search for a duffel bag with wheels. I want it cheap and i want wheels that are recessed into the bottom, i can pop out. I don't need super strength or durability,
I need room to put my stuff to travel, stow my dogs stuff to travel in one bag.
I found one at K-Mart, which I happen to be an affiliate of. Its $17.00 and the right price. It is a 22in bag with wheels and i can pick it up locally in More head city, where I plan a trip soon. Its in stock as well.
On sale and I do get a wee bit of a discount too..
Problem solved. What a quick fix!
Some travel tips: (for those who fly)
If you want to find your bag fast at after the plane lands and luggage is moving out, buy one that is the most outlandish color you can imagine, like yellow, crash orange, purple with dots, or some really strange color. First it will stand out, you will find your bag in seconds. Also it will never get lost. Mark my words, Who cares if you've got fabulous matching luggage if you the airport looses it.
Claiming bags:
Make sure you claim your lost luggage when they call you. If you do not, they put it in storage to be shipped to their re-cycle store, where your stuff is tagged with price tags and resold, profits go to the airlines of course and your stuff goes to new people. Really, i am not joking!
Do not put stuff in your luggage, that will break
Like powder's or liquids. Luggage gets pretty beat up. Unless you really know how to pack, dont do it!
Your luggage goes through a lot from the start of your trip, when you entrust it to that nice lady at the counter, watch it go on the little ramp and it disappears from your site.
If you knew what happened to your luggage after it disappeared, you would never trust another airline employee with your stuff, nor check it in large baggage, for the money you have invested in your suitcase and your belongings, plus the luggage fee they charge you to take it on board, its not worth it.
Consider downsizing to a carry on;
Carry on people don't pay luggage fee's, we carry what we need, what we don't have when we get there we buy, then send back in a box USPS to save money.. Carry on is the way totally to travel cheap!

Back pack- purchased new one read what happened
To me- getting a new backpack was important. My old one, that I got free from Sierra club has seen better days. Its frayed and worn thin. As you read I purchased a Jansport, only to have it break (the straps) and Jansport's warranty just was worth the paper it's printed on.
So I was on a misson yesterday to find a new back pack. I went to the Internet and typed in backpacks, strong and cheap, and ebags came up. I groaned, and went to the site regardless.
I found they had backpacks that were from $15 up, these were last years models or colors that didn't sell well. I went through them, they were expensive ones like case logic (that one was $$100 originally and on sale for $15) and the list went on 5pages to choose from and all in my price range.
I first narrowed my search to backpacks who had lined and padded compartments to stow laptops, the next thing was lots of pockets, pockets for paper, pencils and things i carry all the time, also i needed some waterproofing compartment as well.I do live on the water and my valuables are either in plastic bags or in water proof containers.
I do need alot from a bag!
Well I found one its fabulous, it not only has a laptop area that is padded and just as nice as my computer carrier in size, dept and padding, its also out of the way, in the back and can carry up to a 17in screen laptop, its also got two other compartments, one is big enough to stuff 3 sweatshirt (according to one review)
It has room for everything i carry and it has a built in lunch box. I am in love.
Its a Dakine Campus Pack. It is normally around $60, but i nabbed it for $23.00plus shipping UPS. BTW ebags does not use USPS mail nor ships to PO boxes. So i reluctantly gave my temporary street address for this one time.
It will be here July 27th. Only a few more days with old faithful. I do have to tell you I got the older bag from Sierra club as a free gift from joining their club, I do have to thank them, this bag has been through 3years of falling into water with me attached and without me, and in huge rainstorms (nothing got wet inside btw)
I've taken it twice on trips up north so its covered some ground and its gone to the islands, several trips, its terribly unattractive,in canvas with red and black colos, and seirra club written on it.
But its held up great and I wish i knew who made it, the bag was super and I'm still using it today, and will till the new one comes. More than I can say for the cheap jansport that is in the trash bin out front of the marina!!
So that is the end to the back pack saga, unless Jansport decides to answer my letter and do something nice for me, not! Im not holding my breath at least!
The next chapter in bags is I need a new Duffel bag to go home and I found one on sale at ebags with retractable wheels and handle that is super cheap, and I love super cheap and its from a good manufacturer.
So that will be our next misson to find it..
Happy shopping!

Today's Deals
We are under a heat advisory for two days-that gives me two days to find out how to do my widgets so,
while we are all waiting for me to add widgets. Tags to K-mart, and other affiliates. I have used my amazon status to list a few favorites and bargains of the day on my site.
One of the real deals of the day is the Nikon cool pix camera, this camera has it all. Its 12mega pixel clear images, is small compact pocket book size and its lens are amazing. For the money its one of the best bargains. This camera is comparable to any of the canon power shots. Also check out the used section of the camera, they do have some deals there too! Most are new repackaged cameras or out of stock models ask the seller, they are happy to provide the information and do research the sellers as well, amazon has a page to do that also, its worth the time.
This is my deal of the day, check out the page and find more great bargains on amazon and other places I find that i like the prices, availability and free shipping.
I'm going to take a break, enjoy the air and relax. Look for updates daily.
Have a great day

Frustrated-Backpacks continued-
Talk about being at a stand still. I am so frustrated. It all started yesterday. I had a busy day and never got to my task at hand of building new widgets for my site. Widgets are snippets of html text that go into your site they make the roll over buttons you push to find a site instantly, or they show deals on a site you might want to check out.
Well I never go to it, instead I ended up finding in my email box to my reply on backpacks and worked on it instead.
As you know, I had purchased a backpack from Jansport and used it a few weeks. A few days ago I was at a friends boat, helping to shove him off and my back pack fell off my back and into the water in the creek.
Yes both straps broke and both fasteners practically dissolved. Well first my back pack was soaked. I had not loaded it down, it had just a few basics. No books or heavy stuff.
I checked the straps first and the buckets broke in half. I was so upset.
Here i spent weeks looking for this pack, this one was going to get me through the winter, a winter of hauling my apple laptop on shore for the time were gone, a winter of having to keep my stuff dry while in the dingy riding to shore, a long winter, 7months. This backpack would of gone with me all the way down the Leewards, Windward's and to South America.
Well not this one any longer. after i salvaged my things, thank god i put things in plastic bags since i live on the water, i lost a few scraps of paper, the warranty card ( i sent in for the back pack) copy, the receipt and a few other receipts. Nothing huge..
I gathered the stuff and put it in a plastic bag my friend gave me and threw the bag in the trunk of the car, it was soaked and it was full of river mud, and muck. If you've ever been to NC we have some muddy creeks.
Well i got on the computer and wrote to Jansport, they have an email and a huge site. Here is a world wide presence. Well yesterday I got my answer. I had told them what happened and how i couldn't even send the bag back, (god it smelled from river water) and was a mess. A friend in town who repairs canvas even said, no way i can't fix that.. So i tossed it.
Well Jansport wrote me and said, "no bag no warranty" They offered to repair the bag, but that is all they could do, their experts would tell me if the bag was beyond repair. I just was so upset!
Here i bought it in good faith and all the work and time i put into it and read and filled out the warranty card and sent it in. Well I'm out the $$ I spent for the bag, Target where i got the bag on sale, no longer carries it in stock.maybe next spring when school starts i was told by Customer Representative.
Jansport won't replace it, they just don't realize how banged up it was and smelly.. So im out of a bag, Im glad i saved the bag that I was sent when joining Serra club, its held up for 3years of real use.
I plan to write Jansport back again and tell them to read my site, at this time, I would appreciate anyone interested in a Jansport backpack bag to either not buy one and boycott them, or to read the warranty very carefully and keep a copy in a safe place.
I am so mad that this happened and more so that Jansport was more worried about inspecting the bag that was un-salvagable. I thought if the worst happened they'd replace it.
Well that is the story of the backpack. Next payday I do plan to find a new pack, I've found the one that will fit my needs and its NOT A JANSPORT.
Sorry Jansport you just lost a customer, someone who purchased bags for their kids, grand kids and themselves. It's your loss.
So be a good consumer don't just shop, but investigate. $40 may not seem like alot to spend on a back pack but that is what I am out?
Oh back to the widgets, Im in process now, I hope to add a new page to this blog and add widgets to help guide you to new places to shop and save. Again sorry for the delay, a whole day shot?

Purchasing a backpack
Everyone has different needs. I don't carry a purse, as it can't fit all the things I need to carry for my daytime or nighttime use. Instead I have turned to a backpack.
A back pack that can carry my computer, its power cord. A backpack that has a zippered pocket to carry a water bottle i can fill at home. One that has great pockets for little things like change, car keys and small stuff. It also has to be strong and light weight, but have comfortable straps that are adjustable.
Comfort is key in wearing a backpack. Also have a handle to hold it, when you need it right by your side to grab something inside. A pocket for your cell phone
also a bit of waterproofing in the pockets. After all I do live on a boat and water is my enemy<VBG>
So I started my search for a back pack that would fit all my needs. First I went to Jansport.com http://www.jansport.com/
I went to Jansport, as they have the largest selection of bags in the US, Canada and World wide, and are available at most retail stores almost anywhere.
I went thru the selection of back packs and read the descriptions of what each did, what amounts they held, the size of pockets, inner and outer compartments, zippered and non zippered compartments, back pack with holders for computers, cell phones, ones bottom of the pile to top of the heap.
I found one that suited all my needs, it was a nice mid priced (at $40) and came in some nice colors that were acceptable.
I then went to next-tag http://www.nexttag.com/ This site allowed me to compare prices at both retail outlets i could drive to, or computer outlets and stores on line i could purchase on line from.
I also found other bags sources on line to check thru nexttag. I found another great source called E-bags http://www.ebags.com/ This was everything you can imagine.
Not just backpacks (the largest retail section on line) but also purses, messenger bags and any style of bag you need. From the fanciest purse from designers to the plain ordinary messenger bag to a computer bag for the purest in backpacks.
After this I narrowed my search to price and type of bag I wanted.
I had chosen a type of bag, to suit my needs and a model, style and color. I was not closed on color btw, I didn't mind any color. But my price was firm, I had only $40 to spend. The bag had to carry my laptop computer, so it had to have a place and room for the laptop, my cords (power and dc type cords) and be cushioned well. I also needed a compartment for my cell phone, its power cords and dc adaptors. I needed a place to stow my wallet and change purse. I wanted a spot to hang up my keys on the inside, but handy to get at fast.
Well I found the bag. After an extensive Internet search, i found my bag at target. They had them only thru the Internet sales, and it came with free shipping to my area. I ordered it..
I looked on targets site for its SSL (secured server) to make sure my identity from my credit card was safe, so i used a credit card to purchase it.
Its a great bag and so far is doing a great job.
Depending on how many sites you choose to look at, to compare prices of the item you wish to purchase,is up to you. But make sure when you purchase you do this:
1. Check out the manufacturer warrenty
2. Checking out of the site to pay, always look for the SSL (secured server id)
3. Make sure you have the correct address to send your purchase
4. When you recieve the new item, save the reciept and make a copy to put in a safe place too!
5. Fill out the warrenty information and send it in immediatly. If there is no card go on line and find the warrenty information and fill it in and send it to the company thru their website.
6. Make sure you use your new purchase, as the directions state, if it states this product hold no more than 20lbs, dont over load it, you can violate the warrenty.
7. Enjoy your purchase.

Tips on Saving Money On Grocerys
Tips on How to Save Money on Groceries
- Go shopping alone-
- Why? You can concentrate better. Having children, husbands and friends distract you from what your doing. You loose your train of thought. You have to stay focused to do this task. Shop alone, make it a day for yourself. Remember to treat yourself to a drink or something you like. Its your day, alone with your thoughts to do one job.
- Have a budget and stick to it-
- Every payday set aside the amount of money you think you need to buy grocery's for that pay period. If you get paid every two weeks, plan your purchases to buy food for two weeks, stocking up on products on sale should you find them. If you get paid monthly, you plan for one month after you set your budget. Stick to how much you plan to spend and should you find the items less and spend less, tuck that amount in your wallet and save it for later, you might need something else and then have an extra $20, that is what I do.
- Make fewer, larger trips-
- Shopping less often pays off big. First you spend less on gas. Right there you've save money, perhaps $5 of 6dollars. If you plan well, find sale items and cut costs using your preplanned strategy's you will be able to purchase more, spend less and have more food items to work with in the time frame you plan, lets say a month. You can never buy too much, what you don't use this month, you can cross off your list for next months trip and buy other items you also need or want, perhaps things you couldn't afford last trip.
- Don’t shop hungry-
- NEVER SHOP HUNGRY!!! Always have something to eat before you enter the grocery store. Grocery stores use stragys to make you buy things when your most vulnerable, when your hungry. The smell of expensive rotisserie chicken, the aroma of fresh baked bread, the lure of fancy packaging, they all work on you when your hungry. They work to the stores advantage and not you and your budget. Stay on track. Make a tuna sandwich at home, sit eat it and go over your list, drink a diet soda and on the way munch on some chips.. so your full when you go inside..
- Plan your meals in advance-
- This is so important. Plan your budget to spend, then plan how many meals you plan to make per week, or in two weeks or in a month, how ever your budget is. Sit down with a piece of paper and write how many days, what meals you want to make, what ingredients you need for each. Remember making meals from scratch saves money, its box's you buy of premade foods that cost extra dollars, dollars you can spend else where.
- When you make your list of meals, list by each meal what you need to make the meal, lets say you make chicken and rice allot, you need chicken, (whole or cut up) rice, chicken stock, spices you like. Each meal you write down the ingredients. Then you go to your cupboards or pantry. Find out what you have in stock. Then what do you need to complete each meal. Lets say you are out of rice. So rice goes on your list. Planning in advance will keep you on track at the store also, you will focus going to the items you need, avoid the gimmicks, blinkers, and smells and go right to shopping to find your grocery's for that week, bi week or month.
- Scan your cupboards, pantry, and fridge before leaving-
- This is important to make your list for the store, so you buy only what is on the list, no more no less..
- Keep a running list of items you need on your fridge
- This is a great idea, if you can stick up a pad of paper and a pen to the frig or in the pantry DO IT! each time you use something and its empty, WRITE IT DOWN, WRITE THE NAME OF THE ITEM, THE AMOUNT YOU PURCHASED AND THE PRICE YOU GOT IT LAST. SO YOU CAN KEEP TRACK AND PRICE SHOP BETTER. ITS TEDIOUS BUT WORKS WELL! When you go to make your list, grab those out of stock item lists and they will fill in the blanks.
- Break your list down by store and plan your outing accordingly
- As we talked earlier about how stores were set up, for the stores to sell you everything you don't want and spend money you cant afford. You must plan your time in the store
- I know my stores i shop in, I have a list for each store of what I'm to buy, i know where the aisles are at each store, i go right to those places, i don't wander around looking, i know what i want to buy and I go right to each aisle to buy it, my list also is organized by aisle
- like aisle 2 has candy, on one side and canned soup on the other, i go to aisle 2 and purchase only canned soup and skip the candy. I also shop for meats last, for two reasons, one so they are on top of my food and not intermingled in it, and two they are still cold and will manage a long trip home better.
- MY list is organized to get my canned and packaged goods first , so i do he aisles, then i do the meat counter, then lastly i do dairy , butter eggs milk and cheese..
- I don't have a freezer but if you do freezer foods, the frozen food aisle will be last for most people, so foods don't thaw out. Do invest in a cold bag for frozen foods or fresh meats, they keep food cold a long time, and are worth the small price you pay
- I also bring my own bags when I'm far from home. Since i live on a boat and a thin budget and must provision when i can, i have cloth bags (like from publix) I pack my bags according to weight and what i can carry, and then put them in a cart i bring that is fold up and take them to the bus stop to take home to the boat, when i get to the dingy i just hand the easy to handle cloth bags with grocery's in them to the person with me and load up the dingy, and fold up the cart to put in the dingy and drive back to the boat.. makes my trip alot easier.
- Use recycle bags as i do, while its nice to have plastic bags, were you aware how few people use them, most throw them out. OMG
- I use them for bathroom garbage, lining the cans, to do small trash in the kitchen , like peeling shrimp, potatoes or small things. When i cook, given my galley is the size of most closets. I use a clean plastic bag (from the grocery store) to throw all my stuff i use for the meal away, like the cans or box's or wrappings or eggshells, what ever, that is my garbage, when I'm done i tie it up and throw it in my big trash (more on this later) recycle this stuff people!!!
- Plan your trip through the store to minimize wandering the aisles
- Don't wander, find what you need, get it into the cart, first then look at end caps or sales
- if you think you've extra..
- Don’t forget your list when you head to the store, but…
- Don't forget your calculator-
- Most important thing beside you list is your calculator, pocket purse size or what ever, i use my phone that has one on it as an application (app) but I use it, every thing that goes in the basket, goes on the calculator. I know how much i purchase, as i go thru the aisles.
- I don't have to wonder, count on my fingers or worry, i have something that Tally's up the prices as i go... Take it,it also will save you money.
- Don’t be afraid of store brands-
- I do buy stuff that is a store brand, its how i save money, and I'm saying shaved my budget from $400 weekly to $200 bimonthly. I did this by buying the store brand or house brand tuna or salmon or chili. it saves you alot of money, compare cans Hormel chili with beans at Walmart is $200 a can, the same chili from the same company, but packaged under the house brand of Great Foods is .89cents. WOW huge difference, I buy GF brand and save $1.11cents per can. With that savings, which seems like nothing I can buy an extra box of pasta for .89for a lb and still have .20cents left over..
- so go for it, buy the store brands, you ll find they are just super good buys and taste just the same.
- Buy the Sunday paper-
- Well the Sunday paper use to give some great coupon deals, if you buy name brands, and if you still do then use the coupons, but again buyer beware, coupons have short self life, they have to be used that week, and not all stores take coupons. Check your list and decide if you can get that item cheaper by purchasing store brand or name brand with the coupon. Usually the coupons save you less money, unless you know how to work the system, i never figured it out, so i don't use many. I do get coupons from the Internet but only on things i like and i normally buy.
- Keep an eye on the weekly store circular=
- Always check the store circular on the Internet.
- Remember when you are out of an item write down the name of it, the brand of it, when you make your grocery list put those things on it too, and then take your list, go to the computer, pull up the stores you shop in and check the weekly and the monthly store circulars for deals on what you normally buy. Don't buy something you never tried, or never buy just cause they say its on sale, its usually a trap. look at things carefully.
- Clip (and use!) coupons for name brand items-Check the store’s website for printable coupons
- Yes coupons are great, go to the circulars, they do have a coupon page like on dollar general, down load and print the ones you like and toss the rest. Use only coupons on what you buy normally, what you like and stay away from name brand coupons its rare you save any money on anything they advertise. Do check for double coupon days and coupon specials. Food lion does honor all coupons and does double days.. so some times it does pay, but have them in your purse and figure them into your budget and give them to the cashier after shes done with check out before the total is rung up.
- Stock up (within reason) when things are on sale
- I do stock up when things are on sale. If tuna or salmon is 2cans for one price and its what i normally pay then i add an extra 2-4 cans, and stock up. Depends on the item, I don't do stock ups on toilet paper or paper towels as i already buy them in bulk. But if you find some thing you can stock up on, like chicken breasts on sale for .99 a pound then get 10lbs, get an extra box of zip lock baggies at the dollar store, and repack them for many nights of dinners and freeze them. Allot of meats on sale (check the dates) stay good in the freezer for 3months. Down load a calender on what foods you can freeze and how long you can store them in frig or freezer. its good to have on hand.
- Get rain checks when sale items are out of stock
- Rain checks are great, its a pain in the butt to go get them, but they are worth it. go to the manager and say your out of del-monte catsup and its on sale this week for .89 a bottle, there are none on the shelves, do you have more in stock, if not can i have a rain check and for the same item at the same price. Most stores want you to come back and will issue a rain check.. use them when you need them, watch the dates, some are dated to expire, if you close to a date and still cant use the item, ask he manager to extend or reissue it. They will! They want you to keep coming back
- Visit multiple stores to get the best deals, or…
- we are talking organized one stop. Plan for the week, two weeks or month, get all at one trip, don't go back for one item, just put it on your list and substitute something else for it or change your meals around to exclude it. Try not to go a 2d time, only for one thing, if you do you ll have a shopping cart of stuff you found on sale you don't need at all?
- Ask your preferred store to match prices form elsewhere
- I just started doing this myself. I saw an item at one store that was 1.09 on sale and the same item at another store for .99cents. i went to the store manager, told him i saw this and asked to price match, he did and wrote me a ticket for that item, i got it for.99cents
- and bought two of them.. I have done it for large items like fans, or small appliances, saw the ad, priced it out at 2-3 stores, like Lowe's or Target and then went to the store where i found the item at the highest price and they did price match to the lowest price.
- it works but you have to be insistent, show where its located (what store ) at what price and be prepared, i take the circular with me and say see its here in black and white.
- you have to be firm, prepared and honest.
- Avoid non-grocery items that can be bought for less elsewhere
- Yes, don't buy cleaning products at grocery stores, they tend to mark up even the smallest amounts. Go to places like dollar general they usually have great deals on all cleaning products and carry all name brands. Last week they had buckets on sale, i got one for $1.50, next week i was in West marine and the same bucket, was $5.. The exact same bucket, black , same handle , same grip, same weight and i was so surprised i lifted it and it was the same manufacturer on the bottom.. same as.. I save alot on one bucket
- going to the dollar store.. same with mops, brooms and other stuff..
- Joins the store’s affinity program and flash your card
- Most stores have great card deals, make sure you don't put your social security number on their form or any information you don't want them to know. I usually put just my cell phone ( a throwaway) and my Po box, i never give them my Internet address, i can find specials myself and don't want their junk mail. But the cards have saved me alot of money esp traveling my Winn dixie card saved me $12 at one store on a handful of items one trip. so they do work but again try to give as little information on the forms they give you for the card as possible.
- Buy a chest freezer
- If you have room for one in your garage or basement, go for it, Sams club has the best deals on appliances I've ever seen. You can shop and buy on line and they do deliver its http://www.samsclub.com. Another one is Lowes, you can find great buys there too its http://www.lowes.com both have weekly specials, close outs and great deals try them, if i had room id have a freezer.
- Buy in bulk, but…
- The but is do you have the capcity to store in bulk safely.
- Buy plastic jars with screw on tops, they keep moisture out and freshness in, bulk items are pasta, rice, coffee, sugar, salt, flour, corn meal, baking supplys, brownsugar (i double wrap in plastic wrap then store in plastic containers, they dont get hard that way.)
- Cook large batches and freeze for later
- Depends on your freezer size, your frig size and your family size. I like to cook chicken in large batchs. then make a week of meals, it helps my budget as chicken is on sale here for .99cents a lb and for breasts, i can make alot of meals out of 4-5lbs of breasts (boneless) Its watch what you buy, plan time to cook and package it, and make a plan on meals you can stick to.
- Don’t waste leftovers
- I live on left overs, they are my favorite food. I take what is left from yesterdays dinner of pork chops, and make another whole meals using the left over 2center cut pork chops from day one.. i love them, pasta is another one, i love cold pasta, and people eat pasta salad, in summer when we do bring adish to pass, i can always warm up last nights spagetti sauce ( i make great marinra sauce) put it over new pasta wrap it and go, bring a stick of frech bread with butter garlic and herbs and its a dinner or a dish to pass.
- yes i cheat alot but left overs are great, be creative
- Eat less – seriously, many people eat way more than necessary
- I use a measuring cup to measure out foods, i use less food that way, you need on cup of vegatables, 4oz of meat or fish for an average dinner for one person. find out what normal serving protions are, if they are too big for you (you notice you have too many left over foods) then either cut down the repcipe or measure out servings. I do it and it saves money.
- Cook from scratch, avoid processed foods
- I dont like processed foods, i make mac n cheese from scratch, spagetti from scratch and lots of foods and sauces from simple easy on hand ingredients. I buy a few processed foods like great foods mac n cheese or chili in the can, as af ter a long day sailing, im not always up to making a big dinner or am to tired to do more than boil water.
- but for the most part I do cook from scratch to the best of my ablitys.
- Avoid frozen/prepared entrees
- I dont use frozen foods, i found most were discusting and most were costly and i dont own a freezer! So i avoid them, they suck money from your budget, waste time
- example: stoffers french bread pizza $7 for two pizzas, this consists of one half of a stick of french bread cut in half again, topped with sauce, cheese and condiments. not many of any of them.
- For alot less i can buy 1 french bread stick $2, cut it into four portions, use my own shredded cheeze and condiments i like, bake in oven, my cost with sauce, meat and cheese was $ 3.50 to make 4 pieces of french bread pizza, their cost was $7 plus tax to make two pieces of shrived up frozen bread with almost no sauce little cheese and some cut up crap that looked like veggies and meat.. big difference
- make your own. if you like pizza and are to lazy to make it.There is a solution go to sams club they make a great pizza uncooked, with tons of meat toppings and cheese. They run about $7 for a large pizza and its half of what a pizza place charges. when i shop at sams my two treats i love are slice of everything pizza and a diet coke or their icecreame both are inexpensive and can be whole meals, wholesome and great, the pizza is fresh when you come in the door btw.. never got a bad piece even in puerto rico<G>
- Eat more fruits/veggies, cut back on meat
In the winter we do rely more on meatless meals than meat meals, more mac n cheeze,
more bean stuffed tacos or tostadas, more veggies, sometimes fresh sometimes canned
but less meat, it works for us, depends on your normal intake of foods and how you
prepare them. I use a pressure pot alot (simlar to a pressure cooker but smaller and safer)
So beans are a snap and i use dry beans on the run.
- Eat in season fruits/vegetables
- Now adays everything is in season,no matter where you live, go to this page http://www.blogger.com/post-create.g?blogID=4874213020714507734
- It has a nice page about fruit and whats in season. You can go to the grocery store no matter what are you live in and buy fresh fruit, that is fresh from where its picked and grown, then packaged and shipped to you. Remember in your area red grapes are never inseason , your state doesnt grow red seedless grapes especially during the winter. But the country Chili grows red seedless grapes and their big season is winter, so many stores b uy from grocery store wholesalers, who deal with those people in those countrys and get the grapes sent to your state, again you pay extra for the grapes, packaging and of course shipping. It is the high cost of paying for fruits and veggies in your area, esp areas where there are short growning seasons
- So buying fruits and veggies in season is looking to your local food produce stands, farmers markets and places like this. Not the grocery store where they have no seasons, everthing is available at a price. Are you willing to pay it?
- Plant a garden
- If you have the room to do this, and the time to tend it, meaning tilling soil, planting seeds, watering and weeding it. It pays off big time. It depends not just on your time, but also where you live and growing seasons. You do have to plan and wait for the right time for the weather to till the soil, plant seeds and small nearly grown plants.
- Hit the local farmer’s market
- These are always hard to find. Now the road side stands are no longer on the roadside, you have to either find someone local who knows where the farmer markets are located or find the city or towns home page, they do list farmers markets in most of them we've seen.
- Drink more water, fewer costly beverages
- We do drink more water, we learned early on to purchase a water filter. NO matter if were out at sea using our 200gallon tanks of water, or at a dock using city water we filter it. We recommend pur water filters, the filters are easy to change and not terribly expensive. We also found them all over where we traveled, even Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Virgin islands. In puerto rico they were actually cheaper than USA.. But none the less we found them.
- About 5years ago, when we were stocking the boat up to go cruising, we found water took up alot of space, i mean bottled water. We decided then and there to start using a water filter and buying a couple of nice water bottles we could refill and drink from, also a nice pitcher for the water to get cold in as well.
- The first trip went great, we used then a water filter pitcher. We had it 2 years. We replaced it recently with a pur water tank, we stow it when underway, and stow it full of water, so we have water while underway. We always have fresh water. Most of you live in a house and have fucets and can put a pur water filter on your faucet to filter your water. Go to this site and read about PUR brand water filters, and where you can purchase them. http://www.purwater.com/ Pur has a website, you can find where to purchase it and what particulates it filters out. IT has saved us thousands of dollars in not buying bottles of water. Also were helping the enviorment. We dont use as many plastic bottles or generate as much garbage as well.. so look into it. You can also find deals on the system, filters and pur parts at http://www.NextTag.com you can look at what is out there. We recommend this product exclusively, its really a money saver and we have great water to drink all the time.
- Be on the lookout for pricing errors at the register
- Pay attention at the register, watch the items being rung up, yes cashiers even with scanners make mistakes. If you see them ring up something for the wrong price or too many times, stop them, ask, if they cant find it on the tape, then call the manager. It's your money. Don't day dream, use your time wisely. Watch what is rung up and how!
- Be sure they scan instant coupons that are attached to some items
- Again read your coupons before using them, make sure that the items you buy were scanned and the coupon read went to each of those items. Again mistakes can be made make sure you catch them right away or you'll go home less the money you planned on and not have any recourse. If you catch it at the cash register, its corrected and done.
- Always fill out and send your rebates
- First read the rebates and see what you get for the rebate and what they require to send in, if its just a copy of the receipe then make a copy of the reciept and circle the idem or high light it.. attach it to the rebate form with a paperclip or staple and send it in. The faster you send it in, the faster you get the rebate. ON large items its usually the copy of the sales reciept, sometimes a manager signature, while in line getting checked out read the rebate, circle the details if it needs a signature, after your checked thru then ask the manager to sign the rebate form.. its faster now then later to make a 2d trip to the store.

What stores do I shop at
People ask me, what stores do you shop at. How do you find such bargains and don't use coupons or blinkies? Its a little research on the computer, taking stock, knowing what you need (not what you want) and planning ahead.
First I plan what i am going to buy. Today its food at the grocery store. But which store, where are the sales and how do i find them.
After I've taken stock, made my list, then I start on the Internet to find the stores I like and the buys I want.
For food my first stop is Dollar General. Their site to find them is
http://www.dollargeneral.com. That is their main page and on the top of the page is a navigation bar. It has the following
Current ads, DG brands, Coupons,Sweeps and events, Fan space,About, serving others. Under each of those heading is a mini menu you can select from. Go there now and look at the main page and see what is on it.
ON this page I select coupons. ON coupon page it tells me what coupons i can print for what items i may have on my list. It also tells me what coupons are honored at Dollar General (DG)
Dollar General not only honors coupons from all manufactured food brands in the USA, but also other store coupons.http://www.coupons.com/alink.asp?go=15245eo6310
on this page you can see all the coupons for in-store items. They also host a coupon site for other stores, to save money at Kohl's, Kmart, Walmart and even Barnes and Nobel. The coupon link is there, the coupons are easy to see and read, and you just check the ones you want, print them and you put them in your list of things you plan to purchase next.. keeping in mind the dates of expiration of the coupons.
This month from mid July to Mid August DG is having some sales, one is paper towels. We use a lot of paper products. Normally we go to Sam's club .http:www.SamsClub.com and stock up. But were between big trips, so DG will be fine. I also found a cooler, its a small one I have been looking for a while. It holds just 14pops(cans) and ice and probably a few sandwich's. But when were sailing for 3days with no stops at land or anchoring, it will be nice to have on deck, to keep our trips below to a minimum. Its only $15 and looks great, its now on my list too.
They also have paper plates the large size of Hefty brand on sale, 170 count for $4.50 (about $1 cheaper than Walmarts home brand this week) but I will check Walmarts circular to make sure now
Paper towels are the 12pk for $10, a great buy, now i have to find a coupon to see if i can get even $1 more dollar off. So lets look.
Well I went to Walmart http://www.walmart.com and looked at their circular for this week. It had the same paper towels on sale but a smaller size and not as good of a deal. So DG will get my business this week.
Now I'm going to cruise my next store Food Lion. http://www.foodlion.com . Food lion always has great specials on dairy products like butter, milk, eggs and cheese and they are all on sale, so they are on my list to stop, but no deal on paper towels. The best buy is still Dollar General.
But my Food Lion is across the street from a new DG , so is just one stop and cross the street to stop 2, so this pay period I'M saving gas by not going to walmart in New Bern or Havelock..
So after checking the ads (they change every Wednesday) and making a list of what I'm out of, what we need, and those extras like potato chips and cookies we want. I find what i can get for how much i have to spend.
By the way DG has been kind enough to join our site, as I'm going to be an affiliate for them. I hope to find more stores to introduce you to, that have good bargains in your area and are places I wish they had near me.
Because I spend 7months of the year traveling south. I also visit some great stores there, Publix, Winn Dixie, Piggly wiggly are three of my favorite places to show when I'm on my way down to Florida. I find publix and Winn Dixie both have great savings cards
Winn Dixie has great sales and usually the card saves you a few dollars more, they require less information about you as well for the card, Publix doesn't use cards, they mark things down low, but their real bargains like Winn Dixie are hidden.
Yes bend low or peak around corners and you find their store brand of publix or Winn Dixie, there store brands like walmart are purchased directly from the manufacturer and taste exactly like the name brand. It is cause they come from the name brand.
So if you purchase publix brand mac n cheese, you get the same ingredients made by the name brand company in a plain box with the publix logo on it.. All there brands were great, we only found one thing we didn't like and that was laundry detergent. Its one of those things you like a certain kind cause you have certain needs.
But the rest from Brillo pads, to dish soap, to no brand honey, to publix dairy products to canned goods all were better or as good as the brand name, in fact you couldn't tell the difference in a blind taste test.
So we liked those three stores. Those are the most popular stores in the Vero beach area. I loved the sales on everything at publix and found i had to really keep my mind on my list, as they had tempting smells of fresh bread, roasted chicken and many odds and ends i could use, but don't really need at the moment.
So if your near publix or winn dixie do enjoy them, other stores we love are Aldis (the whole sale for Trader Joe's). Trader Joe's (who has the widest selection of California wine at any US store.
Again both have websites, how to find their locations and are user friendly with ads and coupons, although Trader Joe's has a news letter on line and in the mail they would rather send their customers with specials or recipes. They don't like the word sale, as all of their products are the lowest, best quality money can buy..
But do watch their put-togethers. They do a sample idem of lets say a salad. On the table is the salad, a small cup you can try and then the person running the booth shows you where to get the lettuce, the frig bin next to her, the dressing on the table and the croutons are in her hand. Yes in three easy steps you have salad with special dressing and you make it all in seconds saving you time. I did price it out, the dressing I can make for Penny's on the dollar, its just a few ingredients, the salad was from a bag, id rather buy romaine tear it up and make salad, add tomatoes to it, the croutons were expensive but you can find the same ones at he dollar store, the salad they made was $4 a portion and $12 for their ingredients, my salad at home is around $1.50 a serving and about $4 for 4-5 servings for a nice dinner.. or side dish
add chicken and is about $2 more..Again its how you look at things.
Again its what you choose to eat, choose to buy and choose to prepare that makes the difference. If you don't mind cooking, preparing food and making an extra serving here and there to save money and time then my tips are helpful.
But if you hate to cook, rather be in a restaurant for all meals and live in am on coffee and sweets. Then find a Starbucks and a good diner. Again sorry I can't help you..
Hopefully as this blog goes on, I will get more visitors and more traffic and you will be able to find coupons, links and places to help you shop savvy and smart too!

Oh last point to remember, while many grocery stores use cards to locate you for pinpointing your needs, I found a couple who do not do this, one is food lion. They have great sales, esp two for one prices on all food and non food items. The card has really saved us money each visit. Usually $5-10 dollars. So its worth having.
Other cards like drug stores (CVS) are not worth having, they suck you in with money coupons good or items you never want to buy or dont need.. so get cards that work, the grocery ones are usually very good.. From what I've used them.
See you in the Aisles!
